Finance Charges

Return to chapter overview

Facilities have the ability to apply finance charges to an overdue patient account with no outstanding insurance. The charge will be applied during the statement run. Before utilizing finance charges, an administrative charge item with a valid General Ledger number should be set up for Finance Charges. This will be the item number the system will use when creating finance charges. The Finance Charge fields on page 7 of the AHIS Control Record should also be answered appropriately. Refer to the Table Maintenance section of this User Guide on how to answer these fields.

When Sort by Zip Code of the Accounts Receivable reports (Weekly/Monthly Reports) is generated, the prompt, “Do you wish to generate finance charges?” will appear. Answering with Listing Only will print only a list of accounts that are eligible for the finance charge, along with the amount that will be applied to their account. Answering with an No will not apply the finance charge. Answering with a Yes will generate finance charges and place the charge on the Charge Review screen of Patient Charging. The charges will need to be posted in Patient Charging before they will be applied to the patient accounts. The following patients will have a finance charge applied to their account:

Patient account balance must be greater than $0.

There should be no outstanding insurance on the patient account.

The patient must have been discharged from the facility, and the date must be at least 60 days prior to the date used in the AR File build.

The patient has not made a payment to their account within the last 60 days prior to the statement date (date used in the AR File build).

NOTE: A bill switch of % may be loaded in the Bill Switch field in the Guarantor/Ins tab on the Registration and ADT screen. This bill switch will prevent those designated accounts from receiving a finance charge during the statement run process. The account will still receive a statement and will age in accordance with TruBridge aging requirements.
