Short-term acute care hospitals must submit cost reports containing data on the cost incurred by the hospital for providing inpatient and outpatient hospital services for which the hospital is not compensated. The following may be used to calculate the uncompensated care payment:

 

•Charity Care Charge Data

•Discounts given to uninsured patients meeting the hospital's financial assistance policy/uninsured discount policy.

•Non-Medicare Bad Debt

•Non-Reimbursed Medicare Bad Debt

 

The following three patient detail level reports will be used to support the services reported on Worksheet S-10; Total Charity Care, Patient Payments and Total Hospital Bad Debt.
